Rise & Riot is more than just a poetry slam; it’s a pulsating platform where raw voices erupt, burning issues spark conversation, and passion ignites the flames of change. Inspired by the vibrant spirit of Inkundla, we celebrate diverse artistic expression and create a space where powerful words collide, building bridges between communities.

Here, poets rise:

  • Unleashing unfiltered truths: Tackling social injustices, personal experiences, and everything in between, igniting dialogues that challenge perspectives and foster empathy.
  • Open mic sessions: Share your voice, spark debate, and connect with an audience eager to listen and understand.
  • Diverse judging panels: Ensure a tapestry of perspectives are woven into the competition, enriching the experience and fueling meaningful discussions.

But Rise & Riot isn’t just about words; it’s about action:

  • Words that move mountains: Witness powerful performances that paint vivid pictures of social issues, motivating the audience to become agents of change.
  • Calls to action: Don’t just listen, be inspired! Poets empower the audience to get involved and make a tangible difference in their communities.
  • Partnerships for impact: We join forces with organizations working on the issues addressed, providing concrete ways for your passion to translate into action.

Rise & Riot transcends competition:

  • A melting pot of voices: We welcome poets and audience members from all walks of life, fostering a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere where diversity is celebrated.
  • Collaborative workshops: Bridge the gap between communities through workshops where poets share their styles and perspectives, fostering understanding and collaboration.
  • Global reach: Aiming to send a poet to the World Poetry Slam, we carry the voices and experiences of our community onto the international stage.

Rise & Riot: Where your words become the weapons of change. Are you ready to join the fight?

The inaugural heat of the Rise & Riot Poetry Slam was magic. Seventeen poets graced the stage, passionately raising their voices to advocate for free expression, challenge realities, and share their deepest feelings through the art of spoken word poetry. Following three intense rounds of captivating performances, Overdose emerged as the first champion of Rise & Riot, with Zeefa and Monica Jackson securing the positions of first and second runners-up respectively.
